Installing Electric Poultry Netting: What to Know

Before shopping for an electric chicken fence, here are some tips to keep in mind.

How to Find the Best Poultry Netting

You should consider a few things as you search for the best poultry netting for your birds.

First, the height – we’ll address this more in detail below, but it’s important to ensure that your fence is tall enough so your chickens can’t fly or jump over it.

You may also want to consider a fence that offers the opportunity to expand.

Make sure your energizer will support the additional material, too – some can power just a few nets while others can power dozens at a time.

Check on the power source of the fence charger – AC or DC powers some while others need solar energy.

Finally, think carefully about the material of your fence. You can generally buy electric poultry netting made of aluminum or galvanized.

Both offer some resistance to rusting, but the poly rope has higher tensile strength and offers incredible power – so it’s a third option you might want to consider.

Is Electric Poultry Netting Safe for Chickens?

You might be hesitant to shop for an electric fence for chickens because you are worried that they aren’t exactly safe.

Don’t worry – an electric chicken fence is about as safe as possible.

In most cases, an electric chicken fence is meant to keep chickens contained, but more so, to keep predators out.

Chickens may get a mild shock from the fence when they touch it, but their dense feathers often insulate them from too much shock.

Most predators, however, are surprised when they bump up against an electric chicken fence.

That’s especially true if they bump it with a cold, wet nose!

You must watch out for the only safety concern when a chicken gets its head stuck inside the electric fence.

However, you can eliminate this worry by making sure you select one with appropriate-sized openings that are suitable for the size of your chickens.

How High Should an Electric Fence Be For Chickens?

4 to 6 feet is the ideal height for an electric fence for chickens.

While you might get away with a bit shorter if you have chickens that are not prone to flightiness (think heavy, slow-moving animals like meat chickens), birds who like to be escape artists will do better with a taller electric fence.

The taller height will also serve as a more formidable barrier to keeping hungry, clever predators from getting to your poultry.

How Many Joules Poultry Netting Do You Need?

Figuring out how much power you need for your fence can be tricky.

Generally, you can use one .5 joule charger or higher for up to four rolls of electric poultry netting.

This varies, so always check the recommendations from your electric fence manufacturer to make sure you buy the right one for your chickens.

Premier offers a variety of electrical poultry netting products, but this electric fence is, without a doubt, one of the best.

It is portable and easy to assemble and protects predators like coyotes, foxes, dogs, and raccoons.

When we used this product, the only issue we noticed was that the fence is easily overcome by the growth of grass and weeds around the bottom – it easily loses a charge if you aren’t careful about routine maintenance.

Another potential issue is that the gaps in the netting are large enough for small birds, like chicks and young hens, to get through.

Otherwise, ew love everything about this fence.

It’s easy to install and can even be used with larger animals, like goats, sheep, ducks, geese, and more.

  • Comes with everything you need to get started, including the netting and energizer
  • A generous 30-day warranty and solar back the battery energizes covered with a 2-year warranty

This is another electric poultry netting for you to consider. At 40 inches high, it’s tall enough to keep most chickens and other kinds of animals contained.

It has wireless vertical and horizontal strands, so you don’t have to worry as much about it not holding a charge in tall grass.

It’s easy to set this fence up – provided that the ground is not too soft and not too hard. Getting the posts to stand upright when the soil isn’t perfect can be tricky, so you’ll need to exercise some patience.

You can buy a few more stakes for additional support, though, and since this fence comes with a repair kit that will let you fix the issues should they arise. It’s one of the best options if you don’t mind getting your hands dirty.

  • Comes with extra installation stakes
  • Well-built and easy to fix
  • Doesn’t require as much weed removal around the fence

  • Not the best for challenging soils

  • The Included SL-8 Energizer is Capable of Powering Up to 500' (3 full size nets) of Starkline Poultry Netting!

At 48″ x 164′, this electric poultry netting with a .8J energizer, grounding rod, fence tester, connectors, and all accessories you might need is a one-stop-shop for creating the perfect and safest electrified enclosure.

Quick and easy to set up, you can assemble it in just 45 minutes.

It comes with 16 fiberglass posts with galvanized double spiked stakes.

With this 50m electric poultry netting kit, you can cover a larger area giving your hens much more room to free-range while protecting them from any land predators.

This is a major difference between this fence and many others on this list – many electric chicken fences come with PVC posts prone to sagging and bending.

That’s not the case with this fence! The fiberglass posts are easy to insert into the soil, even heavy clay soil that can be notoriously difficult to work with.

The Energizer

The energizer can power up to 500 feet of netting, making it a good option for chicken owners who want to connect multiple nets to give their chickens more room to free-range.

Another thing we loved about this fence is that the mesh is composed of horizontal strands with vertical struts every three inches.

The openings on this fence, though, aren’t all the same size.

Those at the bottom of the fence have smaller openings; you can keep even young chicks inside this fence.

The biggest downside to this fence is that it does require some careful attention when it comes time to install it.

It can take more than an hour to ensure the posts aren’t sagging (even though you can get it in the ground quickly in less time, you’ll want to check each post to ensure your panels are held totally upright with nos aging).

If you don’t take the time to do this, it is super easy for chickens to walk right through, under, or fly over the fence.

  • Vertical strands make it difficult for animals to get in or out every three inches.
  • Solid double-spiked stakes
  • You can use it with small chicks

  • 48″ still might not be tall enough for some flighty birds

4. Petween Electric Fence Netting for Poultry

Petween Electric Fence Netting for Poultry, Chicken, 35" H x 164' L, 14 Posts, 2 Spikes,Green
  • Stable even in hilly terrain or uneven terrain, compatible with all commercially available netting.
  • Suitable for for Poultry, chickens, ducks, geese, and more.
  • Particularly small mesh width in the lower area of the net.
  • Easy to assemble and disassemble, safe, UV-resistant plastic.
  • Smaller openings at the bottom keep small chicks from squeezing through the net.

This is another excellent electric fence to consider, especially if you are installing a chicken fence on rocky, hilly, or otherwise uneven terrain.

You can use it with other kinds of netting and for all different types of animals, including chickens, geese, ducks, and more.

Like the last option we reviewed, this one also has a smaller mesh width in the lower portions of the net.

This makes it much harder for conniving chickens to wiggle their way out of the lower portions of the fence.

You can even house small chicks within this pen!

Plastic Posts

It is easy to assemble and made with UV-resistant plastic.

Although we don’t love that the posts are made out of plastic, the UV resistance does add a nice touch since it makes the posts less brittle and less likely to wear down and snap after being out in the sun all day.

Another plus side of this electric fence is that it has fluorescent yellow and green strands. This makes it easy to see where your fence is, so you don’t hit it with a weed eater or mower.

Unfortunately, the strands and poles are quite thin, with the clips easily bent under pressure.

Don’t put too much weight on the strands or poles (or too much pressure when trying to insert the stakes in the ground), and you should be fine.

  • Lightweight and easy to install
  • Affordable price
  • Fluorescent strands make it easy to see for maintenance and to move

  • Thin strands and poles

Like Premier, RentACoop is another well-respected brand for all things poultry.

This electric fence is no exception.

With it, you can keep all kinds of wildlife away from your chickens, including bears, raccoons, dogs, foxes, wolves, and more.

The biggest downside to this fence? It doesn’t come with an energizer. It has a pretty hefty price tag not to have a charger included.

Of course, you can buy it separately (and this electric fence is a real winner, so it might be worth spending a bit of extra money).

Easy Set-Up

It’s easy to set up, too, with posts that are pre-fastened to the fence. In most cases, you can install it in less than 15 minutes!

Compared to all the other electric fences we tried, this one was by far the fastest to install and move.

You can sometimes move it even faster if you have a second person to help you. It’s a good idea to mow before installing it to make things a bit quicker.

It comes with spiked guy lines that can help prevent the fence from sagging, along with double spiked posts for extra support.

Unfortunately, you must be vigilant about timing the grass and other vegetation along the edge of the fence.

It can lower the current to almost nonexistent levels when it touches the horizontal wires.

This is a super important tip to keep in mind – if you let the charge get down low at any point, you’re in trouble.

Predators learn very quickly when a fence isn’t “hot,” and you don’t want to run the risk of offering them a free buffet!

  • You can assemble it in any shape
  • Lightweight and relatively easy to assemble and move
  • Multiple rolls can be connected to extend the range of the fence

  • Not sold with an energizer, which will be another added expense for an already expensive fence

Do Electric Poultry Fences Work?

Electric poultry fences work – and they are a highly effective way to allow your chickens to free-range without leaving them susceptible to predators.

You’ll need to do some maintenance around the fence, particularly during the rapid period of growth in the summer, to make sure weeds and grass don’t grow up around the bottom netting and prevent it from holding a charge.

Otherwise, electric poultry netting is the best option for keeping your chickens happy, healthy, and safe.
